​English Language Programs

Mission

The mission of the the Language Center is to prepare students to communicate using the English Language skills, and to encourage them to be life-long learners with sound critical thinking skills who respect diversity, appreciate dialogue, understand the value of personal development and are ready to serve the community.

Purpose

Dar Al-Hekma's University Language Center is specifically designed to enhance students' English skills, and in so doing, provide them with the best possible grounding to enter the University's degree programs. Learning takes place in a collaborative and friendly atmosphere where our dedicated team of professionals offers practical advice to help students develop their English language and study skills to become better autonomous learners.

The Language Center enables students who successfully fulfill the requirements of the program, to become academically qualified to enroll in University courses. Students are trained to develop critical thinking and active learning skills with academic readiness for university level work. The University offers different types of undergraduate scholarships to help students in all University majors.

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The English Language Program (ELD) at the Continuing Education Department is an intensive 12-level English language program, of 5 weeks each, taught by Dar Al-Hekma academic staff. The program is designed specifically to teach non-native speakers the fundamentals of English (grammar, reading, writing, and verbal communication). The ELD Academic English is ideal for students who want to improve professionally, academically, and/or personally. The program combines best practices from the British and the American curriculum with a particular focus on writing and speaking.

Throughout the programs, students are required to extensively read, write, and prepare presentations. Technology is integrated into the curriculum using programs such as Quizlet, Showbie, Smart Devices, Story Creator, google docs, etc.

​​​​​ENRM Course Description​


This course aims to equip university students in different majors with essential academic writing and communication skills. It provides comprehensive guidance through the writing process, emphasizing clarity, coherence, and effective structure. Students will develop key skills such as summarizing, paraphrasing, and expanding academic vocabulary, while also enhancing their ability to communicate effectively in academic settings. Reflective practices are integrated to promote self-assessment and continuous improvement in both written and oral communication, preparing students for academic success.

Total Hours: 55 hours (45 face-to-face & 10 online self-study) 

This course is solely for University students enrolled in different DAH majors.


Who to register in the course?​​


Any student who passes LinguaSkill test but scores less than 169 in writing should register in ENRM as it is a pre-requisite for COM1. ​

Students should pass ENRM in order to graduate. ​


​English Language Admission (via LinguaSkill Test)​


All newly admitted students are required to take the LinguaSkill English Placement Test, administered by The Language Center (TLC). Placement and admission decisions will be based on test results as follows:


1. Admission Criteria by School

A. Schools of Business, Law, Education, and Health & Behavioral Sciences

  • Overall score 162+ and Writing score 169+: Eligible to begin major courses.
  • Overall score 162+ but Writing score below 169: Must register for the ENRM (English Remedial Course)
  • Overall score below 162: Must enroll in the Intensive English Program.


B. Schools of Engineering, Computing, and Design​

  • Overall score 162+: Eligible to begin major courses.
  • Overall score between 142–161: Eligible to begin major courses and required to register for ENRM.
  • Overall score below 142: Must enroll in the Intensive English Program.​

2. Students Completing Level 10 at TLC

Students who have completed Level 10 at TLC must take a writing assessment. Based on their performance, they will either:​

  • ​Proceed directly to their major, or
  • ​Be required to register for ENRM alongside their major courses.​

​​​​​​The General English Program is designed to meet the needs of working individuals who wish either to continue their education or to improve their English language skills for work or personal purposes. There are 11 levels that are offered, each of which consists of intensive integrated skills: listening, writing, reading, vocabulary building, and grammar taught by experienced qualified instructors. It is a program that develops the student's ability to communicate in English, by making them work on their practical language skills for daily and professional purposes.

The program is offered to both male & female candidates as follows:


  • The Program has 11  levels.
  • Each level is offered in 5  weeks for a total of 60 training hours.
  • Time of the course: From 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM Or from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM 
  • At the successful completion of each level, trainees get a certificate from the Continuing Education Department at Dar Al-Hekma University.

​​English for Young Learners​​

​The English for Young Learners is a program for teenagers between 10-15years of age. It is designed to improve language learning and develop critical thinking skills guided by qualified English language speakers. The program offers:

  • Specialized English courses tailored for teenagers
  • Classes rich in materials and activities to keep young minds interested
  • Activities using English for real-life communication, with intensive speaking to boost confidence
  • Counseling and assessment to help check the progress

​The Continuing Education Department (CED) Faculty are specialized and qualified in the field of teaching English as a second/foreign language. They have Masters Degrees in Teaching English as a Second Language or professional certification in a field such as CELTA, DELTA, and/or TESOL. The CED Faculty undergo a rigorous yearly professional development program through attending and participating in in-house training programs focusing on learning and teaching, assessment, critical thinking, test writing…etc. In addition, they attend and participate in international conferences and training programs on teaching English as a second language.

​Faculty enhance learner autonomy by applying outcome-based approaches and providing a critical thinking framework to build language proficiency.
